DREAM OR REALITY?

DREAM OR REALITY?

Мы и мир

BY ANASTASIA ZAKHAROVA | 26 JUNE 2019

We have begun to think less and less about what art is. On the one hand, art is something unattainable while still being accessible to all. On the other hand, art is in our daily routine. These are the usual states of things that define and “direct” art. In other words, art is a synthesis of high ideals and the truths of life. One follows from the other, there is a connection between them and if we break it, the very essence of art will go into non-existence. So, what is art? Let’s examine it.

“The truth of life”, it seems, reveals everything: life + truth = life truth. Everyday life is what surrounds us and that we encounter every day. It cannot be changed because it is reality. Such a truth is generally easy to find in works of art from different eras. Truth is familiar to everyone. From the schoolyears «Golden Autumn» of Levitan. Birches, a river, a field — the nature of our Motherland is reflected in all its glory. The work of Vladimir Mayakovsky is permeated by Soviet ideology. A lot of posters with appeals, an unusual way of presenting their thoughts. The new country demanded a different art format.

A difference in human views determines a different perception of reality. “Woe from Wit” by Griboyedov, “Fathers and Sons” by Turgenev are probably the most vivid examples of the clash of worldviews of the main characters. But each has its own truth of life, each is right in its own way.

And what do the ideals mean? Especially the high ideals? High ideals are those that we strive for. In each era, people want to leave their mark on history. How? By creating new ideals when the old ones are reached. Our everyday life is nothing but the ideals of the past. Now art together with science creates incredible things: skyscrapers, sports cars, even jet planes and rockets. They would not exist if it had not occurred to someone to launch a paper airplane into the sky and find out how it flies. Someday, people will surely go to Mars, and a new (as yet unattainable) goal will be the conquest of our solar system, and later of the galaxy.

Progress does not stand still; art goes along with it. HG Wells and other anti-utopian writers in their works seemed to predict the future: the emergence of buses, escalators, laser weapons, and the Internet. At the beginning of the 20th century, all this seemed fantastic. Now we cannot imagine our life without it.

It turns out that art not only consists of “ordinary” and “incredible”. Science is part of art. Just as art is part of science. Already they are inextricably linked to each other. And what will happen in a few years?
