“SMOKED ANGLE”, SHOKHONKA, LEVITAN … WHERE HAVE THEY MET AND GATHERED?
BY ILYA LOBOV | MAY 29, 2019
Russia is an amazing country! I never cease to be amazed at the beauty of landscapes, the richness of history, and the people of Russia. At the end of May, I was able to understand the intricacies of time and destinies in a small Volga Ples, which has a population of just over 1,700 people.
Spread out at the foot of the cliff, the town lives its measured life.
There are no industrial enterprises here. It has only one school. But it is very clean and beautiful here. But there are few jobs for young people: hotel service, trade, and transportation.
Here, in Ples, the fates of many famous people miraculously intertwined. Ples was loved by many painters. In the three years spent in Ples, Levitan created almost 200 paintings, one fifth of his creative heritage. Korovin, Makovsky, Savitsky, Vasilyev, Aladzhalov, Baksheev, Korin, and the Chernetsov brothers worked here.
You’d be surprised, but it was here, in the house-museum of Levitan in Ples, that I saw a familiar look. The “Crimean Landscape” painting captured a partial view of the future Artek in 1887.
What else surprised me in Ples? The abundance of smoked fish. I even tried a “smoked angle”. This is an open patty with smoked perch in it.
The confluence of the river Shokhonka and the Volga created such a beautiful place that the famous Ples appeared on its banks.
Russia is an amazing country. One has only to take a closer look at it. Ahead of us there is the summer and we will have enough time to get acquainted with Russia. Travel around Russia, enjoy Russia, get acquainted with its history and culture!
